The dual EIMOS mortar system represents a significant advancement in battlefield firepower, merging mobility and operational flexibility in a single, versatile system. This new development uniquely integrates two mortar systems: one mounted onboard the vehicle and a traditional dismounted mortar, both controlled by a common fire control system. This dual configuration enables forces to seamlessly adapt between mounted and dismounted operations depending on mission requirements, providing unmatched tactical versatility in both urban and open terrain.
Firing standard 81mm smoothbore mortar rounds, the system delivers effective support at distances of up to 6,300 meters, with a maximum rate of fire reaching 15 rounds per minute. Designed to be operated by a minimum crew of two, though four are recommended for optimal effectiveness, the system maximizes efficiency while minimizing manpower requirements. Its 360-degree traverse and elevation angles from +40° to +85° allow the weapon to engage threats from any direction without repositioning or deploying stabilizers, further enhancing its rapid response capability.
One of the standout features of the dual EIMOS is its shoot-and-scoot functionality. The system can be deployed and begin firing in under 30 seconds, with no stabilization time required, and can vacate its position immediately after delivering fire. This high-speed operational cycle significantly improves survivability against counter-battery threats in contested environments. The integration into the URO VAMTAC ST5 further enhances this agility, offering deep fording capabilities of up to 1.5 meters without any prior preparation—an unprecedented feature in the global defense market for this category of system.
The fire control architecture of the dual EIMOS incorporates an advanced automatic aiming and fire control system, which is supported by two degraded targeting systems for redundancy. A state-of-the-art Inertial Navigation Unit (INU), mounted at the end of the barrel, ensures exceptional aiming accuracy even in GPS-denied environments. With ammunition racks accommodating up to 82 mortar rounds and autonomous operation capabilities for up to 50 aiming actions without vehicle power, the system is well-suited for prolonged missions in harsh or remote locations.
The URO VAMTAC ST5, which serves as the platform for the dual EIMOS, is a high-mobility tactical vehicle developed by the Spanish manufacturer UROVESA. Designed for a wide range of military and defense applications, the VAMTAC features a robust 4x4 chassis capable of handling rugged terrain, including off-road and amphibious environments. It is known for its modularity, allowing various mission-specific payloads to be integrated easily. The ST5 variant used in this configuration is optimized for deep fording operations and offers superior protection, making it an ideal carrier for mobile weapon systems such as the EIMOS mortar.
Rheinmetall's innovation addresses the growing demand for compact, high-performance fire support systems compatible with NATO operational doctrines. By combining rapid deployability, high-precision targeting, and multi-role flexibility on a proven tactical mobility platform, the dual EIMOS redefines mobile indirect fire support. Its debut at FEINDEF 2025 highlights Rheinmetall’s ongoing commitment to delivering technologically advanced and combat-ready solutions tailored for modern armed forces. This system is poised to become a cornerstone for future mortar operations across a wide spectrum of missions and environments.
