Focus: Swedish Saab CB90 Fast Attack Boats Donated to Ukraine Deliver Advanced Combat Capabilities.

On May 4, 2025, Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) publicly highlighted a major enhancement in its operational capabilities following the integration of Swedish Combat Boat 90 (CB90) fast combat boat into its fleet. The announcement, made via the GUR’s official Telegram account, was accompanied by remarks from the commander of one of the special forces units, known by the call sign “Swede.” In an interview with Svenska Dagbladet, a daily newspaper published in Stockholm, Sweden, the commander detailed how the CB90s have dramatically improved the reach and effectiveness of Ukraine’s special operations forces in maritime domains.

The commander, who leads a GUR (Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate) special forces unit and operates under the call sign “Swede,” emphasized that the CB90s are actively employed in a variety of high-risk missions, including reconnaissance patrols, logistical supply runs, personnel landings, and operational support in conflict-critical zones. One such area is Zmiiniy Island in the Black Sea—a location of considerable strategic importance that has seen intense Russian and Ukrainian military activity since the early stages of the war. He noted that prior to the CB90’s introduction, many of these operations were either impossible or carried out at significantly greater risk. “They allow us to perform missions that we could not perform before,” he stated, illustrating the tactical edge provided by these high-speed, multi-role combat boats.

Manufactured by Swedish defense firm Saab and developed by Dockstavarvet, the CB90 is a fast, agile, and versatile military assault craft tailored for coastal and riverine warfare. Its robust aluminum hull and shallow draft of just 0.8 meters enable operations close to shorelines and in shallow inland waters—crucial for amphibious maneuvers and surprise insertions. Propelled by twin diesel engines and water jets, the CB90 can reach speeds of up to 40 knots (74 km/h) and perform extreme maneuvers, including rapid deceleration within just 2.5 boat lengths. It can transport 21 fully equipped troops or 4.5 tons of cargo and includes a standard crew of three.

The CB90 is typically armed with three Browning M2HB machine guns and a 40mm Mk 19 grenade launcher. In its advanced variants, like the CB90HSM, it features increased armor protection and the integration of remotely operated weapon stations, such as the Saab Trackfire system. These systems significantly increase firepower and survivability, especially in hostile environments like the Black Sea littoral zone.

Sweden’s support to Ukraine has been substantial. In February 2024, Stockholm delivered 10 CB90-class assault boats as part of a broader military aid package. This was expanded in January 2025, when Sweden donated an additional 16 CB90s, bringing the total number transferred to Ukraine to 26. This makes Sweden one of the largest contributors to enhancing Ukraine’s naval capabilities during the ongoing conflict. These vessels are now actively used in combat operations against Russian forces, supporting swift troop movements, interdiction missions, and special forces raids on Russian positions along riverbanks and coastal strongholds.

As part of a new aid tranche, the Swedish government has committed to upgrading the CB90s delivered to Ukraine. Saab has begun retrofitting the vessels with modernized remote weapon stations and enhanced ballistic protection. In addition, integration of advanced radar systems is underway, enabling real-time monitoring of both sea and airspace—critical for early warning and situational awareness in contested waters.

This strategic maritime enhancement comes at a time when control of littoral zones in the Black Sea is increasingly vital. Zmiiniy Island, often at the center of naval and drone skirmishes, remains a critical chokepoint. The arrival and combat deployment of the CB90s give Ukraine a significant edge in this contested theater, enabling high-tempo operations with increased flexibility and lower risk. The deployment illustrates a larger trend: Western allies are not only supplying Ukraine with equipment but are adapting advanced platforms to the unique demands of Ukraine’s operational environment.

As the war continues to evolve, the CB90 stands out as a symbol of both Swedish innovation and Ukraine’s growing proficiency in integrating modern military technologies. With its blend of speed, protection, and modularity, it is redefining how Ukrainian special forces conduct maritime warfare. Army Recognition will continue to follow developments in the CB90 program and broader naval cooperation between Sweden and Ukraine.
